Piano and Voice Studio
Ms. Amy Claire de Cola has been teaching piano and voice for twenty five years. She began taking piano lessons at age 4. At age 12, as the adult choir’s official page turner, she became the substitute pianist for the church choir when her teacher, Jean Harris of Peabody Conservatory, was detained by a snow storm for choir rehearsal. In her teens, she entered numerous festival and competitions under the watchful eye of Peabody graduate, Julia Westphal.
Ms de Cola started her education at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland where she received instruction from Leon Fleisher, Elaine Bonazzi, Mr. Grubb and Ruth Drucker in piano and voice. Her undergraduate degree is in Music from Towson State University where she was under the tutelage of Rinaldo Reyes, Kathryn Merani and Dr. Steven Crawford in piano. In voice she worked with Ruth Drucker, Phyllis Frankel, Shirley Thompson and Dr. Zabo. Ms. de Cola received numerous awards which assisted her at TSU including the Music Department Foundation Award, the Senatorial Scholarship, and awards from Annapolis Opera, the Bel Canto Foundation and the Jewish Arts League Vocal Competitions. Along with a teaching fellowship, she was given a scholarship to attend the University of North Texas where she received the Winspear scholarship to study with Petronel Malan (piano),
Dr. Dale Peters (organ), S. Wayne Foster (organ), Laurel Miller (voice), Harold Highberg, David Brock, Dr. Collins, Greg Ritchey and Paula Homer (drama) where she received a Master of Music Degree in 1998.
Ms.de Cola has performed hundreds of recital in the United States and Italy and over fifty operas and musicals. She has conducted choirs and hand bells, played the organ and piano and has been a soloist in Episcopal, Methodist, Christian Scientist and Unity Churches. Ms. de Cola plays and accompanies regularly at several local churches, for UIL Solo and Ensemble and student recitals. Also, she plays the organ for an area church. She and her husband Gary Pearce, own The Music Store in Garland, Texas where she has a lovely studio and instructs thirty five students ranging from 5 years of age to 80. She prepares students for studio recitals, UIL, festivals, competitions, church work and entrance to college. Over the past twenty years, she has had finalists and first place winners in Piano and Voice in UIL Solo and Ensemble in the state of Texas. Ms de Cola has taught at Richland College, Brook Mays Music and with Music Enrichment with the Garland School District at Austin Academy of Excellence, Naaman Forest High School and South Garland High School. She has numerous students performing and working in the music industry.
Ms. de Cola believes that each student has his or her optimal way to learn whether it be visually, kinesthetically or aurally and uses this to help each student to learn and memorize music. She teaches different styles and genres of music believing the student needs to like the music while learning, Ms. de Cola uses several different methods, depending on the student’s age and music he or she would like to play. Finding basic musicianship important in the foundation of music, she includes theory, games, sight reading drills and sight singing drills. Ms. de Cola encourages two yearly recitals and competitions through UIL and NATS among others.
